When There Are No Words

Thought For The Week 392

I sat before Yahweh with a heavy, much-burdened heart.  I wanted to pray, but I couldn’t find words for all that weighed upon me so heavily.  Situations, circumstances, dear ones all needing a touch from the Master and I didn’t know how to pray.  Does that sound familiar to you?  Have you ever found yourself in a similar place?  It’s easy to feel like a failure when there is need all around, and we’re unable to put words to the burdens.  With trouble in my heart, I called sadly on Yahweh’s dear Name, and almost at once a scripture slid into mind, “[Yahweh], my every desire is in front of you; my sighing is not hidden from you” [Psalm 38:9].  I pondered on this.  Then I lifted my heart to my Father Who knows and asked Him to read its desires, hear its concerns and meet the needs.

One day, Amy Carmichael found herself in like circumstances, and later wrote that Yahweh said to her, “What does it matter about words, when all thy desire is before Me?”  It is a truly breath-taking, powerful thought!  I find it comforting to be reassured of the reality of Yahweh’s closeness and understanding in such a practical manner.  His capacity to know, see and care for us is enormous!  When I lifted my heavy heart to Him that day, the Holy Spirit encouraged me to stay with the silence all around me, and hold the burden before Yahweh for as long as the inner pressure lasted.  I didn’t move until I felt an inner release, but I came away from a wordless prayer time knowing I had connected with the Most High.

Augustine of Hippo, widely known as ‘St. Augustine’, was a righteous man whose life spanned the 5th and 6th centuries.  Memorably he said, “To Him Who is everywhere, men come, not by travelling, but by loving.”  When we’re faced with the difficult situations which leave us without words, let’s remember that we can come to Yahweh, not by any kind of elaborate gestures or involved rituals, but simply by loving Him.  Then, in His Presence, we can communicate without words.
