Square Pegs In Round Holes?

Ever watched a shopping channel? An American voiceover tells you how rubbish your life is and what a chore everything is because you don’t have their product. But buy their product and life will be a breeze! Of course, life without their product isn’t the nightmare they’d like you to believe in the same way that their product doesn’t solve all your problems. Let’s use this “exaggeration for effect” method to look at the question: How do you feel right now about your life, the work of your church, your area of service in your church? The scene: a church building. The cast: a bedraggled, downcast Christian sitting in a pew trying to stay awake. Cue voiceover!

“Do you feel pressured? You have got so much ‘other’ stuff to do you can’t find the time to do the things Yahweh is calling you to do? Do you feel frustrated? You try to do your best but it never seems to be right. Do you feel guilty? You’re only doing this because otherwise you’d feel guilty, so don’t really feel you’re doing it for the right reason. Do you think you are too old? Leave it to the younger ones – they have more time and can do it better than you? Do you feel inadequate? You just don’t feel you have the ability to do this. You feel you’re left to get on with it – and you don’t even knowing if you’re doing it right or wrong. Do you feel burned out? You have so much stuff you want to do, but you’re so tired and worn out that you can barely find the strength to get up in the mornings.

What difference would it make if you did what you were passionate about instead of doing the jobs that no-one else wants to do? What difference would it make if everybody did what they were gifted by Yahweh to do? What difference would it make if everybody had a ministry they were suited to rather than the same few people getting lumbered with everything?

Imagine a church where the

Right people are in the

Right place for the

Right reason at the

Right time -

Imagine a church functioning as it should!”

How is church life for you on a scale of dysfunctional to ideal? Are we in that place of not knowing where we can be of use because we’re “no good at anything”? Are we desperately wishing we could get out of what we are doing in order to do what we think we’re called to do? Or are we fully functioning in the gifting and ability Yahweh has given us?

There is always room for improvement and a better way for the church to function. For you, does that mean a radical overhaul of your church life, or just a couple of tweaks?

Ephesians 4:11-12

“[Yahshua] has given apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to prepare Yahweh’s people for works of ministry, so the body of Yahshua may be built up.”

Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers are special gifts that Yahshua gives to His congregation to equip the members for ministry. Yes, the people are the ministers! And most of us are “the people”. Those leading churches should be working with their congregations to make sure that every member is a minister. Of course, it is not a matter of finding something for everyone to do irrespective of whether they are suited for the task. We should not be about the business of knocking square pegs into round holes. Leaders and church members need to be working together to find out what Yahweh has in store for each one. And personality, characteristics, likes, dislikes, experience, desire – all these play a part.

What Yahweh made you to be determines what He intends you to do. You will understand the purpose you were created for when you understand the kind of person Yahweh has made you. He is consistent in His plan for each of our lives. Would He give us talents, temperaments, and all sorts of life experiences; give us spiritual gifts, but then not use them? We believe that by reviewing and studying these things you’ll discover the ministry Yahweh has for you - the unique way He intends for you to serve Him.
