Vision Essentials 10

Organising S.U.E. Events

The hope of every leadership team is that the vision shared with members will stay in their minds and that they'll have a sharp focus on it.

Finding ways and means to do this should be a priority for leaders. Here is one suggestion I want to offer to fellowships within the Congregation of Yahweh. Of course, the same principles can be easily adapted and used by other church groups.  This idea is connected specifically to the Congregation’s ‘Imagine’ vision first shared in 2011.

The Idea

Organise what I call SUE events.  Let me explain what SUE means by explaining the purpose of these events.  These are to help members explore ways and means in which they can see clearly the ‘Imagine’ vision; understand it, and embrace it. When this is happening we can be sure that the vision will remain alive in the hearts and minds of the people and ensure that we keep on the path of the vision.

So, where the vision is concerned SUE means to

‘see it’,

‘understand it’, and

‘embrace it’.

Make Plans to SUE

Because of the pace of life and our increasingly busy schedules, if we don’t plan for something it doesn’t get done. Plan to hold ‘see it’, ‘understand it’, and ‘embrace it’ events throughout the year. For the first year just plan three events and try to spread them evenly over the year. Once you’ve got the idea you can plan for more the following year.

Here’s a possible schedule:

  •  April/May hold a ‘See it’ event

Do people really ‘see’ all the things we’re reaching for through ‘Imagine’, and do they want to engage in them? Would they like to ‘see it’? Can they ‘see it’ happening? These questions can be used to generate discussion. You could start and end by watching the ‘Imagine’ DVD.

  • July/August hold an ‘Understand it’ event

What do all those things on the ‘ticket’ (Our Imagined Future Promotional Leaflet) mean? This would be an opportunity to unpack the details on the ticket and discuss how they could impact people’s personal lives.

  • November hold an ‘Embrace it’ event

This would give people a chance to examine what part they are playing in achieving the goals of ‘Imagine’.

The events could be as big or small as you want them to be. For example you could have a function after the Sabbath meeting, add a fellowship meal, a speaker sharing on an aspect of ‘Imagine’ for 10-12 minutes, followed by questions and answers, discussion, reflection, and encouragement.

Recognising that it takes a long time for ideas or a vision to sink into people’s minds and hearts let us, as leaders, work at enabling our members to live in the vision by helping them to see, understand, and embrace it.

You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.

Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.

Effective leaders help others to understand the necessity of change and to accept a common vision of the desired outcome.
JOHN KOTTER

The vision is really about empowering workers, giving them all the information about what's going on so they can do a lot more than they've done in the past.

PROVERBS 20:5 (NASB)
A plan in the heart of a man is like deep water, but a man of understanding draws it out.

PROVERBS 24:3 (NASB)
By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established.

Prayer title

Heavenly Father, you have been faithful in giving us a picture of our future – for that we are so grateful. Please help us as a leadership to enable the flock to see what we see. It took many months for us to see this picture ourselves. We understand it will take much more than the few hours we’ve taken to share the vision with the members for them to see it and to get it. We recognise that the vision will only be achieved as all our members see themselves in it and take up their tools to work in it. So, Father we pray that you’ll give us the passion and will to create opportunities for our members to see, understand and embrace the journey that you want us all to make.
