Always Around

Thought For The Week 323 By Val Warsop

When I was growing up, we had a plaque on our living room wall which read:

“CHRIST is the HEAD
        of this house
THE UNSEEN GUEST
       at every meal
THE SILENT LISTENER
 to every conversation.”

These days it is described as ‘an early 20th century religious plaque’, but in our home it was a daily reality.   As a small girl, I was constantly aware of Yahshua not because of these words, but because of the inclusive attitude my parents adopted towards Him.  They lived this reality!  Often I would stare at the plaque and wonder about this unseen, silent Person, but I never questioned His Presence.

Many years later, when my mother was in charge of the domestic running of the Bible College of which my father was principal, she would teach the students that everything they did was spiritual.  She would insist that we cannot separate Yahshua from any part of daily life, nor put Him in ‘selective boxes’ to be available or consulted on specific occasions only.  In her eyes, He was still the ‘Unseen Guest’ and the ‘Silent Listener’.  She would have totally agreed with A.W. Tozer who said, “…eating our breakfast can be just as spiritual as having our family prayers.”

Yahshua never made any distinctions between what we would describe as ‘spiritual’ or ‘natural’ events.  One time, He preached, prayed, and healed the sick all day, and as evening  approached, said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people” [John 6:5]? It was a remote place, much too far from anywhere for them to buy supplies.  So, in His usual calm, practical way, He ordered everyone to sit down and then He fed them; He only needed five loaves and two fishes.  Another time, when His Temple tax was due but there was no money, Yahshua sent Peter off to catch a fish [something that came naturally to the fisherman], assuring him that in its mouth would be sufficient to pay both their taxes [Matthew 17:27]. Astonishing!

The infilling of the Holy Spirit ensures that each day we can be empowered to do everything, no matter what it is, in the name of our beloved Yahshua [see Colossians 3:17], because everything is spiritual!
