When the Roman army were celebrating a great victory there was always a triumphal procession through the streets of Rome and up to the Capitol. Led by the state officials and the senate and heralded by trumpeters there would be an extraordinary and impressive display of spoils taken from the conquered land with pictures and models to show what it was like. This would be followed by the captive princes, leaders and generals in chains, followed by a white bull for sacrificing, musicians, priests swinging their censers, and finally the conquering general and his army. It must have been an awesome display. Interestingly a special, recognisable fragrance was used in the censers when the army was marching home in victory.
Surely this picture must have been in the mind of the Apostle Paul when he wrote about believers being ‘captives in Messiah’s triumphal procession’ and used by Yahweh to ‘spread the aroma of the knowledge of Him everywhere’. (2 Cor. 2:14-15 NIV) Extraordinary that, to Yahweh, we are the pleasing fragrance of Yahshua’s victory over sin! How amazing and beautiful that is! I am learning that it is sufficient to have given myself to Yahshua, [having accepted His forgiveness for my sin] and to have bound myself as a captive to His love, for my life to have a special fragrance known to and recognised by Yahweh Himself, the aroma of Messiah. I pray that I may constantly walk in purity and holiness so that this wonderful aroma may be diffused everywhere I go.
James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters...
