In my experience it is never too early to start, and I have seen children as young as seven baptised in the Spirit and glowing with His Presence as they give praise to Yahweh in heavenly languages. Personally, I was 13 years old when the Spirit flooded my heart with His Presence and took over my tongue with His languages. At that time, as Worship Leader in my fellowship, I was expected to ‘wait on Yahweh’ before meetings and be led of His Spirit in the choice of hymns and songs. Needless to say – I made many mistakes! Over the years I have learned not only that mistakes can be stepping stones to greater understanding and sensitivity, but also that even the most experienced of us make them. There is always room for growth and change.
A basic guideline for checking out that which you feel to be His leading is to know that the Holy Spirit will never direct you to do something that is contrary to what Yahweh’s Word teaches. The apostle James wrote, “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:17 NIV) If your guidance fulfils this criteria – try it; you will know by the results if it was the Holy Spirit who spoke to you. Never be afraid (or ashamed) to admit when you have made a mistake and never be so self-satisfied when you have ‘got it right’, that you forget to give all the praise and glory to Yahweh Himself. I pray you may you have a lifetime of fruitful listening.
