Never Stop Praying

Thought For The Week 206 By Val Warsop

“Teach us to pray,” begged the disciples and, apparently with very little hesitation, Yahshua outlined a prayer that has influenced 21 centuries of believers. [Luke 11:1-4].  Widely recognised around the world, this prayer has been repeated more often than any other; I first learned it in infant school and said it every school day until I went to ‘big’ school.  Such familiarity can breed an indifference to what is truly a masterpiece.

In recent years, I have grown more and more awed by the depth, beauty and continued relevance of this prayer as I have studied and used it.  I often find myself weaving my personal prayer times around its simplicity and sweeping range.  Sometime ago I wrote a personal reflection on the prayer, using it to release myself from the familiar style learned in childhood whilst maintaining the format.

Dear Father in heaven, good and kind
    Let your name be hallowed
In my heart, on my lips,
            And in all the world

 May Your longed-for Kingdom come
And may Your own will be done
            Here on earth
            As it is in heaven

Please supply all that we need today
And forgive my wrong doing
            In just the same way
            That I forgive those
            Who wrong me

Steer me away from temptation
And deliver me from the snares
            And traps
            Of the evil one

To You alone belongs the Kingdom
            And the power
            And the glory
            Forever!

As we continue to pray that Yahweh’s own kingdom will be established here on earth, let us remember that this currently unanswered prayer was first prayed by Yahshua Himself!  Do you ever anguish over the fact that Yahweh seems not to answer some of your prayers?  Does that feel like failure – either yours or His?  Does it feel as though something must be wrong?  Yahshua showed us that it is right to pray into far-reaching situations, and to ask for long-term solutions.  He wants us to be faithful and persevere.  Nothing is too hard for Yahweh; His answers may take us by surprise, or they may not materialise at all.  But He does want us to pray.  His life within us is nourished by prayer, and our knowledge of Him is increased; never stop!
