Numbered And Known

Thought For The Week 347 By Val Warsop

Elijah had lived through an exceptional day!  He had challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel, resulting in a glorious, stunning victory for Yahweh’s Name and Glory.  He had organised a mass execution of 850 pagan prophets; had prayed until rain had fallen, ending a crippling, 3-year drought; and finally raced off to Jezreel [about 25 miles!], swiftly overtaking King Ahab’s speeding chariot as he ran [1 Kings 18:19-46].  I imagine he was utterly exhausted when he arrived!

However, it wasn’t long before he received a furious death threat from an outraged Queen [1 Kings 19:2] and, terrified, ran for his life!  We can only imagine what he thought and how he felt as he wandered the wilderness for the next forty days, eventually sheltering in a cave on Mount Horeb. It was there that Yahweh challenged him. “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He asked.  Elijah was seriously disheartened. “I have zealously served [Yahweh] Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too,” he complained [v10].  But Yahweh didn’t agree! “ I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him” [v18, italics mine], He responded firmly.

As I mused on this reply, I was deeply touched by the sense that Yahweh not only knew but had counted those who loved Him; how precious that seemed.  It’s not just the hairs of our head that are numbered [Matthew 10:30], but each one of us – whoever or wherever we are - is numbered and known.  How comforting to realise that Yahweh notices!  None of our efforts to please Him and walk in obedience to His commandments are ever overlooked.

Millennia ago, as Yahweh looked out over a sinful world His emotions were heart breaking [Genesis 6:5-7].  Regretful and troubled, He wanted to sweep away everything He had created – except He had noticed Noah and his righteousness [v8]!  So He organised protection!  An amazing story!  Yahweh notices everything!
