How easily (it seems) life can overwhelm us with its many and continual demands, as though ‘the wind is against’ us! On the other hand, if I am involved in Yahweh’s work, is it not He who accomplishes through me those things He assigns to me? In fact straining and striving doesn’t accomplish the work our Father gives us to do. When we restfully trust Him to do it through us the work will be completed and done well.
I believe the secret is learning to abide in Yahshua, and recently I read of a man who, learning this secret, said, “I came to (Yahshua) and drank, and I believe I will never be thirsty again. My life’s motto has become ‘Not overwork but overflow,’ and it has already made all the difference in my life.” I was seriously challenged by this, and by an understanding that there is no straining effort in an overflowing life. I was humbled as I realised just how often I fall short of that peaceful place of abiding and trust.
As I mused on these things I found an anonymous statement which seemed to capture it all: “…an overflowing life…is the normal life of omnipotent and ceaseless accomplishment into which [Messiah] invites each of us to enter – today and always.”
He saw the disciples straining at the oars.
