As the world continues to struggle with the Covid-19 pandemic we regularly hear pensive fancies that, ‘When this is all over we’ll…’! We’re in isolation across the globe, and we harbour hopes that, eventually, we’ll be able to hug our families, celebrate special days, and do all those other things that we never thought we’d miss. We don’t know when it will happen, but we’re really looking forward to it! It will be a major event!
For as long as I can remember I’ve been looking forward to a major event of universal proportions. The Bible tells us that Yahshua will one day return to the earth, erupting onto the human scene in majesty and drama of a kind never seen before. The Old Testament scriptures give two very distinct pictures of the promised Messiah: one is of a Suffering Messiah and the other of a Kingly Messiah. The Babe that was born in Bethlehem went on to fulfil every prophecy connected to the Suffering Messiah. After His resurrection, Yahshua appeared several times to His disciples, encouraging and instructing them. Forty days later they were on the Mount of Olives together when Yahshua returned to His Father. The disciples watched in astonishment and awe as He rose slowly from the earth and disappeared into the clouds. What must they have thought? Yahweh sent two angels who said simply, “Why are you staring up into the sky? He’ll come back, and it will be in just the same way” [Acts 1:11, paraphrased]! For almost 2,000 years, believers everywhere have been eagerly anticipating this event.
The second coming of Yahshua won’t be as quiet and unobtrusive as the first, however. Everyone will see it [Revelation 1:7]! It’s going to be impressive! J.B. Phillips says, “…the second irruption of eternity into time will be immediate, violent and conclusive…something sudden, catastrophic and decisive.” In magnificence and glory the Kingly Messiah will return to earth to reign!
When the current isolation slows, we’ll have time to think about and plan those ‘when it’s over’ events. One day this period of time will be over, but we won’t be given advance warning of Yahshua’s return. The time to plan for that is NOW!
