A Lamp For My Feet

Thought For The Week 445

Darkness had fallen over the Island of Jamaica. The crickets were chirping their night chorus, fireflies were flashing their tiny bursts of light, and, with friends, I was making my way home across the back lanes of Clarkstown with the aid of a simple flashlight.  There were no street lights polluting the night and the sky was magnificent - a deep, velvety darkness liberally sprinkled with stars which shone like diamonds.  However, the pathway was rough and irregular, rocky in places, and my friends were guiding me carefully with the aid of their torch. [This was a time long before the mobile phone with its instant light source!] There was much fun and laughter as we chatted and walked and, because we followed the light, we arrived home safely.

I remembered this occasion as I read, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” [Psalm 119:105].  The torch had been very important on that long-ago evening, and the memory gave me a glimpse into the writer’s mindset as he penned this verse.  He, too, knew the value of a lamp for guidance over the rough places of the pathway.  What a heart-warming idea that the Word of Yahweh is a lamp guiding our feet along the pathway of life.  Sometimes there’s a blaze of glorious light as we journey into the purpose of Yahweh. We have a surge of joy and know His will with clarity and confidence. More often, though, we’re beset by the vagaries of life, with its problems, traumas, disappointments and uncertainties.  These very difficulties often seem to isolate us from the source of our help – the Word.

We can depend on His Word to ‘throw light’ into the dark places we encounter.  It may only reveal the next step, for it’s a lamp, not a fluorescent tube or a street light!  But the next step is the important one, and He Who leads us there can and will see us safely to journey’s end.  We can be confidant our Father will deal with us ‘according to His steadfast love’ [Psalm 119:124].  It’s in His nature to do so!
