A Royal Priesthood

Thought For The Week 530

The final plague visited upon Egypt before Israel’s exodus from slavery, was a time of terrible distress, when every firstborn son died. In the middle of the night “... there was a loud wailing throughout Egypt because there wasn’t a house without someone dead” (Exodus 12:30).  The Israelites, however, were protected by the blood which had been splashed over the doorways of every home.  Their firstborn were saved by Yahweh Himself, and, interestingly, this created a debt which, later, the nation would be called upon to discharge.

After Israel had built a fabulous Tabernacle for the worship of Yahweh, it became time to settle the debt!   Yahweh apprised Israel that on that fatal night in Egypt He had sanctified all their firstborn sons to Himself!  “All the firstborn are Mine,” He cried (Numbers 3:13)!  He then revealed His plan to exchange them for the entire tribe of Levi, saying, “I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman” (Numbers 3:12, italics added).  Moses was commanded to assign the Levites to Aaron to assist him and his sons in the work of the new tabernacle.

The gravity and importance of this exchange is shown by Yahweh’s precise instructions.  First there was a census of the Levites and every male, one month old and over, was registered; there were 22,000.  Then all firstborn sons in Israel over one month old were registered; there were 22,273.  Those extra 273 had to be redeemed with silver (Numbers 3:46-48), and this money was given to Aaron and his sons.  Finally, the Levites were allocated no portion in the promised land, for Yahweh declared He would be their portion (Numbers 18:20).  A mind-blowing promise.

When Yahshua died, His blood purchased our salvation, and we are saved from the power of sin and death (redeemed) when we trust in Him.  Yahshua is our High Priest and, as part of His Body, we’re called into a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9).  This priesthood serves Yahweh as He commands, and He then becomes their portion.  It’s profoundly moving to contemplate that Yahweh, Himself, is our inheritance - forever.

Blessed is the person who places his confidence in Yahweh and does not rely on arrogant people or those who follow lies.

Pause For Thought

No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
