Abiding Peace

Thought For The Week 340 By Val Warsop

In a national, annual, commemorative event dedicated to those from Britain and the Commonwealth who have served and sacrificed, an evening of remembrance climaxes with two minutes of total silence.  During this time thousands of poppies float silently down onto the heads of the servicemen and women massed in the Royal Albert Hall; it’s a moving, sobering moment.

The prophet Habakkuk declared, “Yahweh is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him” [2:20, italics added]!  What a remarkable picture that creates in the mind’s eye!  There are very few places we can find total silence.  Is it possible to imagine silence across the whole world?  A silence as total and complete as those two minutes in the Royal Albert Hall? What would it feel like if there was nothing anywhere except a deep sense of awe and appreciation for the Most High?

Our servicepeople are fighting for peace, yet there is no lasting peace.  The apostle John’s vision of the end time speaks of the sending out of a fiery red horse and “its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other” [Revelation 6:4].  Yahshua prophesied, “You will hear of wars and rumours of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come” [Matthew 24:6].  We live in the time of these prophecies, but our hearts can have peace because we know the Prince of Peace.

When we turn our focus away from ourselves and onto Yahshua, we will begin to find a peace ‘which surpasses all understanding’ [Philippians 4:7]; and learn the joy of the ‘quietness and trust’ [Isaiah 30:15] which is the source of our strength.  This is ‘a great peace’ that will never ‘make them stumble’ [Psalm 119:165], and which the world can neither give nor take away; an abiding peace!

“Deep within the centre of the soul is a chamber of peace where Yahweh lives, and where, if we will enter it and quiet all the other sounds, we can hear His ‘gentle whisper’(1 Kings 19:12)” [Anon].
