Yahshua’s public ministry began one Sabbath in the synagogue of Nazareth. He read a Torah portion from Isaiah, where the prophet graphically described the work and calling of the anointed Messiah. He must have astonished everyone when He concluded, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing,” (Luke 4:21). From this time, Yahshua demonstrated the power, authority and calling of the Messiah everywhere He went.
For many years I’ve been fascinated by the way His anointing helps with the deepest emotional needs of the soul. He’s anointed “…To set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy) …” (Luke 4:18, Amplified Bible). Often, these problems can’t be seen, or they hide behind something else. I begged Yahshua to take me ‘behind the scenes’ and show me what He saw.
A woman approached Him who’d had twelve dreadful years of suffering and constant bleeding. According to the Torah she was unclean, and would contaminate everything she used, and everyone she touched. People avoided her and her home. We can scarcely imagine how damaging it was to be seen as disgusting and untouchable, and how unbearable was the weight of shame, reproach, and isolation. Yahshua felt her touch His robe, and it was a potentially compromising situation, but she was instantly healed. As He affirmed and encouraged her, His anointed kindness would’ve healed the emotional pain, too (Mark 5:25-34).
Zacchaeus was a Principal Tax-Collector, extremely rich (from cheating and fraud), hated, despised and a notorious sinner. Anxious to see Yahshua (why?) but too short to see over the crowd, the little man climbed a tree! “When Yahshua came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. ‘Zacchaeus!’ he said. ‘Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today’” (Luke 19:5). What did Yahshua see behind the image Zacchaeus showed to the world? Had he been tyrannised, hated, rejected because of his job? Or perhaps bullied because of his size? Or was there something else? Whatever it was, Yahshua’s anointed Presence brought transformation to Zacchaeus.
Are you crushed by tragedy? Broken through shame or reproach? Swamped by rejection? Yahshua is anointed to help - ask Him!
