Are We Safe?

Thought For The Week 349

Since the advent of the pandemic, it seems that a new greeting has slipped into our language; stay safe!  Widely used as an alternative to ‘goodbye’, it adds a note of caring to conversations, texts, emails and messages of every kind. But what is it, exactly?  A wish? A blessing? A prayer?  I’m reminded that the apostle John wrote, “I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health…” [3 John 1:2].  I grew up with the King James Version and often puzzled over the word ‘wish’; was it even allowed?  Later translations use ‘pray’, ‘desire’ or ‘hope’, but I prefer ‘wish’, since it combines the loving idea of all three.  Which answers my earlier question! I think ‘stay safe’ is also ‘all three’; a wish, a blessing and a prayer.

As believers in Yahshua, however, we’re not dependent on the wishes of others for our safety.  The Bible shows us, again and again, that our safety is in the hands of the One who controls the universe; He commands His angels to take care of us!  “For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone” [Psalm 91:11-12, New Living Translation].  We know Satan used this statement to tempt Yahshua when He was in the wilderness, but without success.  It wasn’t written exclusively for Messiah, though, it’s for all who live in the shelter of Yahweh’s love [verse 1], and He promises to rescue and protect all who trust in His Name [verse 14].

This security service is second to none; the best in the universe! There’s no charge, either, for we move into the shelter of Yahweh’s love through the free gift of salvation; initially obtained, by Yahshua, at immense cost.  “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation” [Hebrews 1:14]?  “We may go on our way in peace and safety,” reflects Charles Spurgeon, “for [Yahweh’s] hosts are all around us.  We do not go unattended at any single moment of our lives.”  We are incredibly safe!

We look at our lives through a spiritual lens now, as we see how our actions as husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, friends and coaches, workers and employers relate to [Yahweh's] will.
