Last week in the thought entitled ‘Oh, To Be Like Him!’ I pondered our scriptural call to be like Yahshua, a goal that demands the dedication of a lifetime. Did you wonder how/if this could happen to you? Have you ever looked at men and women of spiritual maturity and wondered how they became so dedicated? Or perhaps, like me, you’ve looked at Yahshua and wondered how, growing up in our world, He became so amazing? I’ve come to understand the secret lies in commitment!
It’s not the major victories that produce maturity. It’s developed slowly, step by step, in hidden moments of challenge, through those small, private acts of will. It matures through the unseen things we do, those ‘small’ denials of self, the unobserved acts of compassion or giving, the ordinary, unnoticed drudgery of everyday life. Each small step makes a difference, building up to maturity and Yahshua-likeness. “No one sees these little hidden steps, they only see the accomplishment;” writes Amy Carmichael, “but even so, those small steps were taken. There is…no spiritual maturity that is the work of a moment.”
As believers in Yahshua our daily lives should be rooted in commitment, every moment submitted to His purpose. This includes the fun times, family times, and personal times of refreshment, as well as the demands of the working week or those of running the family home. We’re permanent members of Yahweh’s Family and Family standards are required 24/7! The buffetings of daily life are tools in the Hand of Yahweh to bring us to perfection. Always pay attention to the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit to your heart, for He’s keeping watch over your soul.
“… it requires the supernatural grace of [Yahweh],” writes Oswald Chambers, “to live 24-hours in every day as a saint, to go through drudgery as a disciple, to live an ordinary, unobserved, ignored existence as a disciple of [Yahshua]. It is inbred in us that we have to do exceptional things for [Yahweh]; but we have not. We have to be exceptional in the ordinary things, to be holy in mean streets, among mean people, and this is not learned in five minutes.”
