Matthew, who lived and worked with Yahshua, gives us a wonderful picture of our Saviour’s life, with an impressive record of His sermons. His memory of Yahshua’s ‘sermon on the mount’, which covers three chapters of his gospel [Matthew 5-7], is incredible, and how impoverished we’d have been had he not introduced us to the beatitudes [Matthew 5:3-12]! They’re a striking introduction to the sermon and have often been referred to as ‘the beautiful attitudes of Yahshua’.
The sermon itself is Yahshua’s personal, authoritative interpretation of the Torah, Yahweh’s Law, and covers a variety of subjects. The beatitudes constitute the essence of the sermon. They’re not “simply a statement made by [Yahshua] on one occasion,” writes William Barclay, “but the substance of all that He habitually and repeatedly taught His disciples.” I believe they define the characteristics expected from those who love and serve Yahshua.
These beautiful attitudes don’t describe natural tendencies in the human heart, nor are they a list of commendable qualities, but are a standard to be attained - a standard which is in startling contrast to the one offered in our 21st century world! For example, the very first is, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” [5:3]. “There is no-one in the kingdom of heaven,” expounds Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, “who is not poor in spirit. It is the fundamental characteristic of the believer and the citizen of the kingdom.” That doesn’t sound very ‘politically correct’, does it? Or as if it would fit into the psychology of self-absorption existing today. It is, however, a key to all that follows.
The humility of heart which recognises a total dependency on Yahshua for forgiveness and salvation, will lead onwards into the blessedness of spiritual growth. An awareness of sin and unrighteousness which brings mourning, and comfort [v.4]; meekness showing an awareness of self and others [v.5]; spiritual hunger maturing in the heart [v.6]; mercy which manifests spiritual growth [v.7]; as do the desire for purity, and the ability to be a peacemaker [vv.8-9].
These beatitudes are a spiritual biography for one who believes in Yahshua. They should be the ever-growing, ever-changing story of our lives!

This Is My Friend!Blessed is the person who places his confidence in Yahweh and does not rely on arrogant people or those who follow lies.
Psalm 40:4, Names of God Bible
No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
