During recent months, as I’ve been reading my Bible, I’ve become more and more aware of the unique connection between obedience and blessing. After Yahweh appeared to Israel on Mount Sinai and made covenant with them, He promised to bless them in every way if they would obey Him. His expectations, set out in the 10 commandments [Exodus 20:2-17], are the standard by which they were expected to live. Although there are hundreds of others in the Torah, they are to give greater detail to what is expected by the ‘big 10’! Yahweh details the magnitude of His promised blessings in Deuteronomy 28:1-14. These are promised to those who obey His commandments and are astonishing. However, it’s sobering that the following 54 verses detail the curses which will be brought down on those who disobey. It’s wonderful to be in covenant with the Most High, but it carries enormous responsibilities.
On the night before He died, Yahshua instituted the New Covenant, bringing Yahweh’s word through Jeremiah [31:31-34] into being and opening a vibrant, new way for humanity to know Yahweh [Matthew 26:28]. When we receive Yahshua, experiencing the wonder of being born again into a new life, we’re cleansed from past sin by the power of Yahshua’s blood, the blood of the New Covenant. I believe this opens our lives to receive all the blessings of Yahweh, which are activated through obedience.
There are many more blessings itemised throughout the Old Testament as men and women experience the depth of meaning attached to the promises in Deuteronomy. You’ll find them as you read the Psalms and the Prophets, and in many other places, too. Know that all these promises are available to those walking in the New Covenant. The key that unlocks them is obedience and there we find our responsibility. As His people we should receive of His goodness. He’s faithful to His Word and His promises.
Yahweh’s blessings are bountiful; in return He expects our obedience. His dealings with Israel may seem harsh, but He always warns them before punishment and always acknowledges repentance with compassion and forgiveness. We learn obedience through suffering [Hebrew 5:8], but it’s a quality with enormous benefits!
