King David, handsome, talented, popular, and chosen of Yahweh, was a deeply passionate man, who felt everything keenly. Ardent in emotion and fervent of nature, he was described by Yahweh as being a man after His own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). “I call to (Yahweh)… I complain and groan morning, noon, and night,” he complained one day (Psalm 55:16-17). As I read this recently, I was disconcerted, but blessed, by the sheer, open honesty of this man. How often have you found yourself complaining and groaning ‘morning, noon and night’? What do you complain about? Your lot in life? The people? The job? The expectations? The state of the country?
David had a lot going on, and he outlined it for us in this song (Psalm 55). He was under pressure from wicked men, who were trying to bring disaster down on him, stirring up violence and strife in his beloved city. There was crime, trouble and destruction within its walls and oppression and deceit in its marketplace. David was overwhelmed with horror, shuddering with fear and trembling. He wanted to fly to the wilderness, find a place to shelter, and sit out the storm. Does any of this sound familiar? Can you relate to the pressure? Is your personal world in turmoil? David wanted Yahweh to pay attention to him, to sort these people out and fix things.
But there was something else, much worse, the final straw. One of the people giving him trouble was a dear friend, one with whom he’d had sweet fellowship and in who’s company he’d walked to the Temple. The deception was breaking his heart. Betrayed by a friend! Yahshua knew this pain, and He bore its burden for all who have carried it.
There was a lot for David to complain and groan about, but the significant point is that he ‘called to Yahweh’ in order to do it! Never be afraid to take your moans and groans, anxieties and cares, worries and fears to your Father. “Cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you,” cried David, “He will never allow the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22).
