Don't Be Distracted

Thought For The Week 493

A.W. Tozer was an exceptional man, a twentieth century prophet who continues to influence and challenge believers today.  Recently I remembered something he wrote which challenged me. “Whatever excites the curiosity, scatters the thoughts, disquiets the heart, absorbs the interests or shifts our life focus from the kingdom of God within us to the world around us—that is a distraction; and the world is full of them…”  Since he wrote these words, the world has become even more full of distractions.  Do you get distracted?  How easily are you sidetracked from pursuing the things which really matter?  Personally, I’m giving these questions some serious thought!

Throughout the whole of human history, Yahweh has always and constantly wanted His children to seek Him. Through Jeremiah He said, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” [29:13].  Have you ever pondered this strange statement?  Through salvation we have a relationship with Yahweh. He is our Father.  So, do we still need to ‘seek Him’?  From the Scriptures we learn there’s an intimacy available in our personal relationship with Him which is beyond our understanding.  He wants us to know Him in depth and knowledge, in a unique fellowship.  This requires an intensity of commitment for we must seek ‘with all our heart’.

Naturally, the primary purpose of ‘seeking’ is to find!  We seek for something lost, or perhaps a perfect outfit, maybe the trendiest phone, or a flashy car.  We don’t spend time looking for something of no value, but the value depends on us and our own perceptions.  How much value do we attach to seeking for Yahweh?  It demands an earnestness of desire, effort, discipline, humility, and constancy, We must be consumed by a longing to know Him more.  We’ll find answers in prayer times, meditation, reading the Word, and in cultivating a stillness of heart and mind in the quietness of Yahweh’s Presence.

“...Distractions must be conquered,” concludes Tozer, “or they will conquer us.  So let us cultivate simplicity…want fewer things…walk in the Spirit…fill our minds with the Word of God and our hearts with praise.”

We look at our lives through a spiritual lens now, as we see how our actions as husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, friends and coaches, workers and employers relate to [Yahweh's] will.
