Eternal Sacrifice

Thought For The Week 366

The apostle John was a close friend of Yahshua, included in an inner circle of three [Mark 9:2], leaning companionably on Him during the Last Supper [John 21:20], and the one entrusted by our Saviour with the future care of His mother [John 19:26-27].  John spent three years in Yahshua’s company, learning to love Him dearly, and becoming known as the ‘beloved disciple’.

After Yahshua’s resurrection and  return to His Father, Yahweh gave Him an extraordinary revelation of the future [Revelation 1:1]. Yahshua wanted to share this vision with His servants, and chose to do so through His friend, John.  The book of Revelation is a record of everything Yahshua shared.  I am especially interested in some of the things He shared about Himself.

John writes, “I saw a Lamb…He looked as if He had been offered in sacrifice…” [Revelation 5:6, Weymouth Translation].  Reflecting on this, Amy Carmichael writes, “Even in Glory He has not lost the look of one who has been offered in sacrifice.”  I wonder what that ‘look’ would be?  Was it something in His face?  Or the damage of the wounds He carried?  Did He carry the stamp of His rejection in the Judgement Hall and His treatment in the army barracks?  We know it wasn’t a sad look because He has been anointed with joy [Psalm 45:6-8] more than us all!  Amy Carmichael suggests it is based on His empathy with all for whom He died.  Because He walked where we walk, He can say, “I know your doings and your toil and patient suffering…And you endure patiently and have borne burdens for My sake and have never grown weary” [Revelation 2:2-3].  Let Him say that to your heart just now.

In an earlier revelation, John had seen Yahshua in all His majestic splendour [Revelation 1:12-16], and in consequence collapsed in a dead faint [v17]!  It is as though both sides of our beloved Saviour are always there, never forgotten.  He wanted John to see that and share it with us.  Yahshua has walked where we walk and He has been exalted to a realm that will, one day, welcome us!
