Young David was a handsome boy with beautiful eyes, a golden voice, and unique skill on the lyre. His relationship with Yahweh was nurtured on the hills of Bethlehem during his work as a shepherd boy. Although he was anointed to be the future king of Israel while still a teenager, it was many years before this was realised. They were confusing years, fluctuating between great joy and intense sorrow, incredible achievements and dreadful hardships, and between times of knowing himself both highly regarded and deeply hated. Out of his experience he wrote many wonderful songs. He was passionate, honest, practical and immensely talented. His music has spoken into the heart of humanity throughout the centuries, and countless millions have been blessed, helped, encouraged and challenged by this songwriter.
From the depths of personal experience David wrote, “Cast your burden on [Yahweh], and he will sustain you” (Psalm 55:22). Later, he exulted, “Blessed be [Yahweh]! Day after day he bears our burdens” (Psalm 68:19, italics added). What an incredible concept – the Creator of the universe bears our burdens! I was arrested as I read this recently and, pondering its implications, felt stunned. There’s a considerable difference between casting our burdens on Him and knowing He’s carrying them.
What burdens do I have? I asked myself. I was surprised to discover I did have a small list! I wrote it down and looked at it thoughtfully, it looked quite heavy, yet it didn’t feel so. “Yahweh is bearing it for you,” said my heart. A shaft of understanding flooded over me. Yahweh carrying my burdens didn’t mean they disappeared, but that they were bearable.
We’re taught to ‘cast our burdens’ on Him, but surely, you can recall as I can, the despair when, seemingly, prayer didn’t ‘work’, and we carried that burden still! We all face fluctuations in life - joys and sorrows, hardships and blessings, sickness and health, and so much more. Yahweh joys with us over the good times but isn’t afraid to allow us to experience the bad. During those times, if we allow Him, He’ll bear the weight of the burden while we carry the knowledge. Let it rest with Him.
