The story of the birth of Israel as a holy nation, a kingdom of priests separated to Yahweh through covenant, is the theme of the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. Leviticus, so named because it deals with the special duties of the Levites, is mainly concerned with the service of worship in the glorious, newly built Tabernacle. The key thought throughout is holiness. Yahweh said to Israel, “…you must consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am holy” (11:44). The word ‘holy’ appears more often in this book than anywhere else in the Bible.
Yahweh’s instructions to His designated priesthood were precise, clear, and very comprehensive. He expected them to be followed meticulously. For anyone who broke one of Yahweh’s laws, there were detailed instructions of how that sin could be atoned for and the perpetrator forgiven. It’s demanding and horrifying (4:27-31). Charles Spurgeon believes it was Yahweh’s intention “to awaken in people a great disgust of sin by making them see that it could only be put away by suffering and death.” Agonising over those whom he calls ‘triflers with sin’, he continues, “I would have them filled with horror at that detestable thing (sin) which cannot be put away except by that which is infinitely more calculated to shock the instructed mind than rivers of the blood of bulls and goats—I mean the sacrifice of Yahweh’s own Son…” The absolute purity required for each sacrifice speaks to us of the incredible standard of holiness and purity which would be required of Yahshua to make atonement for our sin.
Leviticus stirs my heart with awe and respect as I ponder the equally high standards Yahweh expects of His people today. It teaches me how the identical standard must filter through to every aspect of life and living. Oh, that we could hold that fact in our hearts every day, through all the complexities of life.
Isaiah declared Yahweh to be high and lifted up, exalted, enthroned and worshipped (Isaiah 6:1-3). Yet, for us, He’s also gracious, kind and approachable. Let’s serve Him fervently, love Him passionately, worship Him joyfully, and strive to walk in holiness.
