I'll Meet You There!

Thought For The Week 367

During their time in the wilderness, the Israelites created a magnificent Tabernacle for use in worship.  It was constructed under the direction of Moses from a design given by Yahweh.  The workmanship was superb and only the highest quality materials were used; everything was of the very best!  It’s recorded that 2,193 lbs [yes, pounds] of gold and 7,544 lbs of silver were used in the construction [Exodus 38:24-25].  With gold currently worth around £1,500 per ounce and silver around £16 per ounce, by today’s standards, the Tabernacle would have been worth a veritable fortune.

The holiest place in the Tabernacle was a windowless, heavily curtained, cubic room leading off from the Holy Place.  It held only the Ark of the Covenant, on which was placed the mercy seat, made of pure gold and adorned with cherubim.  “I will meet with you there above the mercy seat” said Yahweh, “between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the testimony” [Exodus 25:22].  Interestingly, we are never told that any light was needed in the Most Holy Place, presumably, Yahweh Himself was the light.

The ark itself was very beautiful.  Built from shittim wood, it was overlaid with pure gold [Exodus 25:10-22].  It was a box-like structure originally built as a container for the two stones on which Yahweh wrote the ten commandments.  Significantly, the mercy seat, from where Yahweh would meet with His people, was placed over the Law.  What an amazing picture of Yahweh’s grace, loving-kindness and compassion.  “I’ll meet you there,” He tells us.  Musing on this, Amy Carmichael concludes, “unhindered communion with [Yahweh] is based on His revealed will, accepted and obeyed.”

Once a year, the High Priest was allowed into the Most Holy Place, and the Presence of Yahweh.  However, Yahshua’s death opened the way into His Father’s Presence for all who accept His gift of forgiveness and cleansing from sin.  We should never take this lightly!  Yahweh meets us at the mercy seat, when we walk in the righteousness of salvation, yielding ourselves to the Holy Spirit, and allowing our lives to be moulded  into the pattern laid out by Him centuries ago.
