In His Time

Thought For The Week 527

As the writer of Hebrews reaches the climax of his deeply moving and inspiring communication, he urges, “…keeping our eyes on [Yahshua], the source and perfecter of our faith…consider him…” (Hebrews 12:2-3, italics added).  Challenged, I did just that!  I paused in my reading to consider Him.  Oh, what joy, what admiration, what wonder such a contemplation evokes. A world of emotion and understanding is captured in His title as ‘source and perfecter of faith’.

As the source of our faith His credentials had to be impeccable; conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, Son of Yahweh.  Oh, the planning that went into that!  First there was a holy nation, then a chosen lineage (Genesis 49:10), then a selected family within that line (2 Samuel 7:16) and, eventually, a virgin daughter of this family (Matthew 1:18).  What meticulous, extensive planning went into the blueprint for Yahshua’s birth - and Yahweh allowed millennia for it to mature.

For Yahshua to become the perfecter, the finisher of our faith, demanded everything He had.  From being equal with Yahweh, He made Himself nothing, taking on the nature of a servant and humbling Himself to an ignominious death as a criminal (Philippians 2:6-8).  He lived as we live, walked where we walk, He was human. He had to experience all we experience so He could relate to us, yet He had to be perfect to make atonement for our sin. His was a lifetime of humble submission and complete devotion.

It’s humbling to learn that “For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame” (Hebrews 12:2).  Our beloved Saviour endured thirty years of waiting and obscurity, three short years of ministry, and the entire agonising, pain-wracked, humiliating disgrace from Gethsemane to the cross, because He was sure of the joy that lay before Him.  It was more than five thousand years from promise (Genesis 3:15) to fulfilment.  No wonder King Solomon could write, “He has made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11, italics added).

Oh, that we, too, could learn to wait on His timing and endure for the eternal joy that is surely before us.

We look at our lives through a spiritual lens now, as we see how our actions as husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, friends and coaches, workers and employers relate to [Yahweh's] will.
