When I think of Yahweh’s attributes, I frequently add the word ‘infinite’. He is infinitely holy and merciful, I reflect. I use the adverb often for it links with my awareness of Yahweh being beyond compare – infinitely so! Recently, I wondered what ‘infinite’ actually means. The dictionary offered: extending indefinitely; immeasurably or inconceivably great or extensive; subject to no limitation or external determination. And, to a degree, it satisfied my personal concept of Yahweh.
“Nothing that is infinite can be less than it is, and it cannot be any more than it was,” writes A.W. Tozer. “It is infinite, which means boundless, unlimited; it has no measurement on any side, because measurements are created things and [Yahweh] is uncreated.” This statement takes my breath away. It’s far more satisfactory than the dictionary! My heart quickens as I ponder each phrase, connecting it with my Father. Try it!
The mercy of Yahweh can never be less than it is and it cannot be more than it was, for it is infinite. Nothing that happens can increase or diminish the extent of His mercy. Yahshua’s death didn’t increase Yahweh’s mercy towards humanity, but happened because of it. “It was the mercy of [Yahweh] that gave us Calvary,” writes Tozer, “not Calvary that gave us the mercy of [Yahweh].” We need to pause and ponder that for a while!
I’m often challenged about ‘the God of the Old Testament’. I’m asked about wars and deaths, rebukes and disciplines. “He’s vengeful and punishing,” they cry. “How can you say He’s a God of love?” I can say it because the Bible says it, and because I’ve experienced it. However, for anyone seriously wanting answers, my advice is to read the Bible again, and again…and again. Only familiarity with the whole story will develop an understanding of the infinite quality of Yahweh’s mercy, compassion and love. It will teach us that the entire book is about it.
Betsie ten Boom, who died in Ravensbrück concentration camp, famously said, “There is no pit so deep, that [Yahweh’s] love is not deeper still.” His love has no measurement on any side. Nor has His mercy. You can be forgiven; ask Him.
