I’ve always been fascinated by the heart-warming picture of Yahshua as an intercessor. The Scripture tells us, “…he is able to save completely those who come to [Yahweh] through him, since he always lives to intercede for them,” [Hebrews 7:25, italics mine]. Take a moment to ponder - how does that feel? It awes me to think of Him praying for me! How does He manage to think of us all? Yet, the Bible tells us He does, and I find myself trying to align my faith with this astonishing knowledge. It’s an awesome, but endearingly personal concept - Yahshua is praying for me!
How would you describe an intercessor? Would you define them by the quantity of prayer, the quality of prayer, or the lifestyle of prayer? All of that, and more? The apostle John gives us a wonderful peep into the fellowship of Yahshua’s last evening. He taught and comforted His disciples, then concluded with the wonderful, intercessory prayer of John 17. Is this how He prays for me, I ask myself? I was startled recently to read, “His intercession is not to be conceived as a vocal saying of prayers,” [Oswald Sanders]. Then how does Yahshua pray?
During the ceremonies of the Day of Atonement, when the High Priest of Israel had to make atonement for the sins of the nation, he uttered not a word. It was the blood of the sacrifice, sprinkled on the mercy seat, which spoke to Yahweh [Leviticus 16]! Yahshua still bears, in His body, visible evidence of His sacrifice, and it’s these wounds, constantly before Yahweh, which guarantee the justice and mercy for which He died. Charles Wesley puts it like this:
Five bleeding wounds He bears received on Calvary
They pour effectual prayers they strongly plead for me
"Forgive him, O forgive," they cry
"Nor let that ransomed sinner die!"
The picture is of our High Priest, before His Father, interceding without words, and without pause. “He ever lives,” writes Oswald Sanders, “to ensure that we receive the full benefits He secured for us by His cross.”
Whatever the day, the time, the pain, or the problem, know Yahshua is praying for you!
