My mother’s older sister was an atheist. As a little girl, I listened to her poking fun at my parents’ faith and puzzled over her unbelief. One day, unexpectedly, her adored husband died. Some years later, I was staying with her and one evening she blurted, “I saw him you know. He came to see me.” Startled, I stared at her. “Who?” “Your Uncle,” she snapped. “Tell me,” I murmured. My Aunt had been asleep when my uncle appeared, walked across the room and sat on the bed. She was stunned! Eventually, this atheist stammered, “Is there a God?” “Yes,” he replied. “Have you seen Him?” “Yes, I have.” “What’s He like?” she demanded. “He is unlike anything you can think or imagine,” was the reply, and as quietly as he’d come, my Uncle left. My Aunt was furious! On a tidal wave of vicious language, she screamed at me, “Why did I ask him such a ‘stupid’ question?” Because she needed to hear that mind-blowing answer?
What’s your personal ‘picture’ of Yahweh? A loving Father? An avenging God? There are so many descriptions throughout the Bible, it’s impossible to even begin to understand Who He is by simply dipping into the Scriptures randomly. The Old Testament does have records of terrible judgements, but they’re linked to years of Yahweh’s longsuffering, warnings, and kindness. Yes, Yahweh punishes sin violently, but He rewards righteousness intensely. To even begin to understand the God of the book, we must read the book – all of it. Not once, or twice, but again and again, until Yahweh’s character becomes clearer, until the immensity of His will, the power of His mercy and the intensity of His judgements is written into our hearts. Those who keep His commandments, He blesses bountifully, while those who don’t are setting themselves up for judgement.
Did you know Yahshua taught more about hell than heaven? He surely knew of its awful finality and the terrible separation from Yahweh it would bring. Yahweh wants us all to be saved from this judgement and has made provision for this through Yahshua. We can spend eternity with Him, where He’s unlike anything we can think or imagine!
