Little Is More

Thought For The Week 410

It’s an electrifying story!  Yahshua, in a desert place, feeding 5,000 people with only 5 small loaves and two fish, and organising the collection of 12 basketfuls of leftovers! His idea of plenty: take a little, feed a multitude, and have more left over than He started with!  Have you noticed He learned this concept from His Father?

During a famine in Israel, Elijah went to Zarephath because Yahweh had commanded a widow to take care of him there.  When he saw her he asked for some water and bread.  Astonished, she replied she’d “only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug” [1 Kings 17:12].  She was going to use it for bread for herself and her son; they’d ‘eat---then die’!  Elijah didn’t panic, wondering if he'd found the right woman, but simply said, “The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day [Yahweh] sends rain on the land.”  So she made him some bread, then fed her household, and she always had a handful of flour and a little cooking oil…until the rains came again.

A prophet’s widow was in dire straits.  Her late husband’s creditors were threatening to take her two sons as slaves to redress his debts. In desperation she went to see Elisha, who listened to the dreadful story,  “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” he asked.  The poor woman had nothing left ‘except a small jar of olive oil’! Yahweh used it to pay the debt, save her sons and give her enough to live on until they were grown!  How? Check out this incredible story in 2 Kings 4:1-7.

Later, Elisha was given 20 barley loaves as a gift.   “Give it to the people to eat,” he told his servant [2 Kings 4:42].  The astonished man replied,  “How can I set this before a hundred men?”  Elisha confidently repeated his order adding, “Yahweh says, ‘They will eat and have some left over’” [v43]. They did – and they had!

Do you ever feel small, insignificant, of little worth?  You qualify for service in the Household of Yahweh, where little is more when given freely to Him.
