Psalm 19 is the inspired work of Israel’s king, David. Inevitably, when reading it, I will find something fresh to encourage or bless me. That this one-time shepherd boy had an extraordinary relationship with Yahweh is beyond question, and his wonderful writings indicate he also had an ardent love of nature – Yahweh’s world. The psalm begins passionately, declaring that the heavens not only declare Yahweh’s glory, but their expanse proclaims the creative work of His hands. Everywhere in our world, regardless of nationality or language, people can hear and see this immense communication of greatness. It’s a mind-blowing concept. The reality of Yahweh’s existence is all around us (vv.1-6).
The next five verses are so full of love and appreciation for Yahweh that they tend to take my breath away with every reading. David’s understanding of his Maker and his lifelong love and appreciation of Him, flow out of every thoughtful, beautiful phrase. It’s unsurprising that he should end the psalm with probing thoughts of his own standing before Yahweh.
Recently, I was caught by the psalm’s climactic prayer, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, Yahweh.” I paused, wondering which of these two things is the most difficult, my speaking or my thinking. Both can be challenging to control! Some of us may have greater difficulty with one than the other. Some have problems with both. I asked myself if the ‘meditation of the heart’ is of a different order to thoughts in my mind. Do unbidden thoughts ever pop into your mind? Sometimes lovely ones, with good intentions, and sometimes otherwise? You’d be an unusual person if this didn’t happen to you! It’s not a sin to have unbidden, questionable thoughts, but we need to deal with them quickly, not allowing them to become meditations of the heart.
This psalm, which probably began as meditations in David’s heart, has blessed men and women for centuries. As we muse on precious, pure, righteous things, the sweetness of our meditations will be distilled into our hearts and on into the lives of those around us, bringing immeasurable blessing.

Psalm 40:4, Names of God Bible
No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
