Over My Tent

Thought For The Week 514

Job was a remarkable man, with an extraordinary story.  Yahweh described him as, “the finest man in all the earth…blameless—a man of complete integrity…” (Job 1:8, New Living Translation).  Yet this amazing tribute unlocked a storm of trouble for Job! Yahweh had been speaking to Satan, who instantly retorted that Job had good reason to trust Yahweh, adding, “You have always put a wall of protection around him…You have made him prosper in everything he does…But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face” (Job 1:9-11).  Astonishingly, Yahweh accepted this challenge.  Initially, Satan was given permission to “Do whatever you want with everything he possesses” (v12)!  Later, when that didn’t work, he was told “…do with him as you please…But spare his life” (2:6).

Poor Job! Within a short time, he was stripped of his wealth, all his children were killed in a dreadful tragedy, and he, himself, was covered in painful boils from head to foot.  In mental, emotional and physical agony, he bemoaned the day he was born (3:11).  Yet, though his world was disintegrating around him, he held on to his integrity.

I was deeply moved by Job’s final words as he asserted his innocence (Job 29-31).  It was the broken cry of an anguished heart, yet his opening picture speaks to me of a life overshadowed by Yahweh.  He said, “If only I could be as in months gone by…in the days when [Yahweh] watched over me…when [His] friendship rested on my tent, when the Almighty was still with me…” (29:1-5, Christian Standard Bible).  I was arrested and enthralled by the beautiful picture of Yahweh’s friendship ‘resting’ on his tent.  What did it mean?  I learned this was Job’s way of describing his lifelong friendship with Yahweh, and his understanding of its ongoing blessing on his household.

Pondering my own life, I whispered to Yahweh, “Is Your friendship over my ‘tent’?”  I mused on His blessings, His peace, His love, and knew the answer was “Yes!”  It’s a heartwarming picture, and it belongs to all who love and trust Him.  His friendship is over your tent!

Blessed is the person who places his confidence in Yahweh and does not rely on arrogant people or those who follow lies.

Pause For Thought

No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
