Remember Jericho

Thought For The Week 489

Israel’s new leader, Joshua, had given instructions to prepare to enter the Promised Land – at last!  Can you imagine the gasps around the camp - the excitement and trepidation?  Shouts of joy and anticipation and the bustle of activity would’ve been everywhere.  Spies were dispatched to check out the land and particularly the nearest city, Jericho.  Within three days Israel was camped by the river Jordan, awaiting instructions from Yahweh.

The citizens of Jericho had gone to ground, the city was in lockdown, no-one was allowed in or out, and the army was on alert.  Everyone was terrified!  In fact, Yahweh had the entire country in melt down; the Canaanites were quaking with fear because of Him [Joshua 2:9-11]!  When the flood waters of Jordan were held back and the entire company of Israel walked across on a dry riverbed, there was further consternation in Canaan [Joshua 5:1].

Settling near Gilgal, Israel received their first orders – circumcise all the males and keep the Passover!  How fascinating that Yahweh had arranged for them to enter the land on the 10th of Aviv!  After Passover, the Commander of Yahweh’s army turned up to talk to Joshua [5:13-15]!  I wonder if that was when the unusual battle plan was unfolded [6:2-5]?

On the first day of ‘Operation Jericho’, as the silent army, orders completed, retreated to the sound of marching feet and the blast of shofars, there must have been major confusion and fear in the city; it was a weird strategy!  One can only imagine how the terror and bewilderment built up over the week. I wonder what the Israelites thought about Joshua’s campaign tactics.  Did the soldiers know the entire plan, or were they given daily orders?  It was Yahweh’s plan – and we know it worked!

Next time you feel trapped by the complications or circumstances of life, remember Jericho.  Yahweh knows how to bring those restricting walls tumbling down – but don’t expect Him to work with your ideas.  Relax. His ways aren’t our ways, but He’s always working for us, and He always has plans, which will bring hope, prosperity and a future [Jeremiah 29:11].  We can trust Him.

Blessed is the person who places his confidence in Yahweh and does not rely on arrogant people or those who follow lies.

Pause For Thought

No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
