Royal Rage

Thought For The Week 458

David, a shepherd boy from Bethlehem, was chosen by Yahweh and anointed to succeed to the throne of Israel.  Despite David being a righteous man, an anointed musician, a songwriter, and someone after Yahweh’s own heart, this appointment was hedged about with danger, rejection, difficulties, and warfare.  Saul didn’t intend to give up the throne without a fight and pursued David and his men relentlessly.  David describes it like this: “The waves of death overwhelmed me…The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path” [2 Samuel 22:5-6].

At this deeply distressing moment, David begged Yahweh for help and the response was astonishing.  “Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they shook because he burned with anger. Smoke rose from his nostrils, and consuming fire came from his mouth; coals were set ablaze by it.  He bent the heavens and came down, total darkness beneath his feet. He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. He made darkness a canopy around him, a gathering of water and thick clouds. From the radiance of his presence, blazing coals were ignited. [Yahweh] thundered from heaven; the Most High made his voice heard.  He shot arrows and scattered them; he hurled lightning bolts and routed them. The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of [Yahweh], at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he pulled me out of deep water. He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but [Yahweh] was my support. He brought me out to a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me” [2 Samuel 22:8-20].

I’m awed by David’s description of the royal rage with which Yahweh championed his cause.  Such support is closely connected to righteousness [v.23].  Righteousness won’t protect us from the bad things that happen, but it ensures Yahweh will sweep in to rescue us when we need Him!  Let’s remember this amazing Being is on our side!  He’s in our corner!

Pause For Thought

No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
