Seventy Thousand Angels?

Thought For The Week 423

Matthew, one of Yahshua’s much-loved disciples, has an amazing memory from that fateful evening when Yahshua was arrested. There was a shocking moment of discovery when the disciples watched one of their own betray their beloved Master with a kiss!  Incensed at the betrayal, Peter pulled out a sword and lashing wildly at the High Priest’s servant, cut off his ear!  Yahshua was, it seemed, more upset about that than He was about the arrest!  “No, no,” He said and, stretching out His hand, healed the amputation with a touch.  He knew resistance wasn’t the way! “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” He asked [Matthew 26: 47-54; John 18:10]?  And just there we have a glimpse of the Prince of Glory, of heavenly majesty!

In Yahshua’s time, each Roman legion comprised around 6,000 men.  So in that moment of supreme royalty He calmly told His disciples His Father would put some 72,000 angels at His disposal just for the asking!  This is our Commander-in-Chief, calmly submitting Himself to His Father’s will, knowingly going to humiliation, rejection, torture and death. If He didn’t do this, then how, He asked, “…would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?” He was never more noble than at that moment when, bound, they dragged Him from Gethsemane!

The scriptures Yahshua referred to are all in the Old Testament, which clearly shows the sacrifice of His perfect Son had always been Yahweh’s ultimate intent. Yahweh’s mercy didn’t begin at Calvary - it led to Calvary.  The extent of such love and mercy are incomprehensible.  Incredibly, “…it was [Yahweh’s] will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and… make his life an offering for sin…” [Isaiah 53:10].  His will, yet one word from His Son, and the whole plan would have dissolved in an army of angelic beings!  Father and Son could have ‘hunkered down’ and become a safe, cosy unit.  But, for love of humanity, neither turned aside! Love so vast, encompassing, immeasurable and infinite is freely, abundantly offered to all!
