The Art Of Contemplation

Thought For The Week 529

Our beloved Father said to Israel, “I am [Yahweh], I change not” (Malachi 3:6), and this concept is affirmed throughout the Bible.  It’s an extraordinary, thought-provoking statement. Yahweh is changeless!  Everything we read about Him in His Word describes who He is today; there’s no change!  Reflecting on this, Charles Spurgeon wrote, “The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy that can ever engage the attention of a child of [Yahweh] is the name, the nature, the person, the work, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom we call Father.”  Whoa! Let’s pause a while for some contemplation!  Contemplation is the action of looking thoughtfully at something for a long time (Oxford Dictionary). How often do you pause to look thoughtfully at the Creator of the universe?  Spurgeon gave us six specific areas to concentrate on and each of them is challenging.

During my time at theological college, I went on a mini retreat with friends.  Armed with Bibles, study books and concordance, we each chose a subject to research.  I decided I needed to know more about Yahweh and naively prepared to learn.  In three days, I uncovered some amazing things, but mainly I began to understand I’d embarked on a study for a lifetime!  For almost 60 years, I’ve never stopped learning about Him or contemplating the wonders of His person.

Charles Spurgeon taught that “Nothing will so enlarge the intellect, nothing so magnify the whole soul...as a devout, earnest, continued investigation of the great subject of the Deity.”  Taking time to ‘look thoughtfully’ at Yahweh has long-term, lasting effects!  Inevitably, lives are changed for the better.

The ‘great subject of Deity’, however, includes Yahshua and the Holy Spirit.  We can learn the art of thoughtful contemplation by concentration on whoever is the One we most want to understand.  But, without doubt, eventually we’ll find our hearts open to consider each One in turn.  “I know nothing,” concludes Spurgeon, “which can so comfort the soul, so calm the swelling billows of grief and sorrow---so speak peace to the winds of trial---as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead.”

Blessed is the person who places his confidence in Yahweh and does not rely on arrogant people or those who follow lies.

Pause For Thought

No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
