Yahweh chose Jeremiah, before he was born [Jeremiah 1:5], commissioning him to bring serious warnings of judgement and devastating punishment to many nations - and Israel in particular. Yahweh told Jeremiah not to marry and raise children because the impending judgment would sweep away the next generation [16:1-4]. “He was called to exercise a ministry that involved him in perpetual sorrow,” writes C.H. Spurgeon. In fact, Jeremiah is often known as the ‘weeping prophet’!
Recently I was savouring the magnificent, life-changing promise Yahweh gave to the world through His servant. Jeremiah, who’d been singled out to prophesy doom and gloom to the nations of his world, was also divinely selected to share the glorious promise that, one day, Yahweh would make a new covenant with Israel!
“This is the covenant I will make…” declares [Yahweh].
“I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
No longer will they teach their neighbour,
or say to one another, ‘Know [Yahweh],’
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares [Yahweh].
“For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.”
[Jeremiah 31:33-34]
A wonderful passage, it’s the best known of Jeremiah and quoted widely in the book of Hebrews. With hindsight, we know Yahweh would accomplish His glorious promise through the sacrifice of Yahshua, but I wonder what Jeremiah thought about it? Did it sound too good to be true? Did he ponder the words after he’d spoken them? Wonder how it could be?
Travel with me through six centuries, to an upper room in Jerusalem, and see a young man, His eyes filled with pain and love, lift a cup of wine, saying, “This cup is the New Covenant, ratified by my blood, which is being poured out for you” [Luke 22:20, Complete Jewish Bible]. In that dimly lighted room almost 2,000 years ago, simply and quietly, Yahweh fulfilled His word through Jeremiah.
We’re living in the era of the New Covenant. Take some time to ponder on the breathtaking things promised by Yahweh through Jeremiah.
