Through Death To Life

Thought For The Week 390

It is said that a renowned scientist once created a seemingly perfect corn seed.  After many trials and tests his creation gave every appearance of being a perfect replica.  Proudly he sent his seed, together with a real one, to a fellow scientist, challenging, “Which of these seeds is the real one?”  Eventually his friend replied, “There was no way to tell them apart. But when I planted them only the real seed bore fruit.”  In the simulated seed there was no capacity to die!

Yahshua knew the principle of life through death.  A few days before He died He said, “…unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself.  But if it dies, it produces much fruit.”  Thoughtfully, He continued, “The one who loves his life will lose it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” [John 12:24-25, Christian Standard Bible].  Clearly His imminent suffering and death were on His mind!  But what did that last part mean? Writing to believers, the apostle Paul explained it like this: “…if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live” [Romans 8:13].  The apostle Peter wrote, “[Yahshua] himself bore our sins in his body on the tree; so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness” [1 Peter 2:24].

When the apostles write about ‘the old Adam’, ‘the flesh’, or ‘dying to sin’, they’re referring to the life we lived previously. When we receive new life in Yahshua, we have a responsibility to maintain that precious gift.  Growing in the knowledge of Yahshua, learning to walk in victory, and experiencing ever-increasing fellowship with Him is not possible unless we are willing to set aside all that is in us of this world and its spirit.  “The old Adam must die, just as a grain of wheat must die if it wants to yield a crop,” writes Andrew Murray. “If we desire the abiding presence of [Yahshua] with us every moment of every day, we will have to accept this lesson---through death to life.”
