Time For Timeout

Thought For The Week 468

George Müller [1805-1898] was a man of faith and vision, a founding member of the Plymouth Brethren, Open Brethren.  During his lifetime, he cared for 10,024 orphans, built 5 orphanages and established 117 schools, educating more than 120,000.  He had no personal finances, never asked for money, received no government support, and never went into debt.  He depended on Yahweh absolutely.  Recently I had a fascinating peep into his heart. “The first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day,” he wrote, “(is) to have my soul happy in the Lord.”  I paused, reread it, pondered.

What did he mean by having his soul ‘happy in the Lord’?  How do I know if my soul is ‘happy in Yahshua’?  A line from a biblical song slipped into mind: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” [Isaiah 26:3].   For me, ‘perfect peace’ is a quality of heart, an inner sense of being settled, of Yahshua being in control.  I considered the many calls upon Müller’s time, the multiple, wide-ranging needs of hundreds of children and began to understand.

We’re all prone to anxious thoughts, troubled hearts, fretful worries which disturb that inner calm.  Müller’s need to have his soul happy in Yahshua equates, for me, to having peace of heart in spite of circumstances.  Attending to that peace ought to be the first great and primary business of my day.  Isn’t it encouraging that Müller wrote he ‘ought’ to attend to this every day; meaning, surely, sometimes he didn’t manage it!

Personally, I don’t function well if my inner world is in turmoil.  When there’s agitation in my soul I don’t interact well with other people, nor do I make the best decisions, or do the most satisfactory work.  Taking time out to be with Yahweh [from a few minutes to however long I need] is always the best option!  King David knew this. “My soul, be quiet before [Yahweh],” he sang, “for from him comes my hope” [Psalm 62:5, International Standard Version].  Time out with Yahweh sets my world to rights, putting everything back in perspective.  Have you tried it?

Blessed is the person who places his confidence in Yahweh and does not rely on arrogant people or those who follow lies.

Pause For Thought

No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
