I belong to the generation which expects things to last, maybe not forever, but at least for a long time! Imagine my astonishment when, approaching my mobile provider with a problem, I was told gently, “Well, it is three years old, it’s past time for an upgrade!” How could that be possible? An upgrade? However, today’s generation is perfectly comfortable with regular upgrades on all its technology; familiar with frequent changes in fashion and style.
Psalm 119 is a magnificent, challenging devotional based on the Word of Yahweh. It’s divided into 22 stanzas, corresponding to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and each one is made up of 8 verses. It’s a beautifully crafted, acrostic poem. But more than that, “The author had a theme that filled his soul, a theme as big as life, that ranged the length and breadth and height and depth of a person’s walk with [Yahweh]” [New International Study Bible]. The entire Psalm rings with words like ‘Torah’, ‘commands’, ‘decrees’, ‘statutes’, ’precepts’ and ‘word’. It’s a ‘must’ read and study for all who love the Word of Yahweh.
Ponder the psalmist’s cry, “give me discernment that I may understand your statutes” [v:125]. Discernment is the ability to judge well, and I find it interesting that he considers he needs this to understand Yahweh’s statutes. I have to ask myself if I’ve ever considered this need. Have you? Do we spend sufficient time considering the statutes – laws, precepts, commandments – that He’s given? It can be too easy to shrug away something we don’t understand or which seems inconvenient or unnecessary.
“The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy” [v:138] he writes later. This is a beautiful, heart-warming sentiment which still finds an echo in our hearts, though written thousands of years ago. Quite simply because Yahweh is still the same and human nature is still the same, so when these two react together we have the same response as our forefathers. Wonderful! You see, He established them to last forever [v:152]! He was so perfect first time round there was never any need for an upgrade! He never goes out of fashion!
