Walking By Faith

Thought For The Week 409

If I were to ask, “What is faith?”, how would you answer?  Would you try to explain what we mean by the word?  Or perhaps quote scripture: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” [Hebrews 11:1].  If that’s your choice, then I ask, “What does that mean?” Is it possible to know we have faith?  If the concept of ‘faith’ is hard to understand, how can we know we are ‘walking by faith’?  Paul states, unequivocally, “For we walk by faith, not by sight” [2 Corinthians 5:7].  In other words, this is the way we live!  Are you walking by faith?

Hebrews 11 is the great ‘faith chapter’ of the Bible.  I love the fact that the writer begins by pointing out it needs faith to believe Yahweh created the Universe and everything in it by simple commands and not through anything already in existence.  Do you believe that?  Then you have faith!  The writer systematically works through the Old Testament, citing men and women who’ve walked by faith.  It’s an interesting read!  Some of those mentioned, like Abraham, Joseph and Moses, are amazing, and we stand in awe of them.  Whereas Gideon was frightened when the angel appeared to him, and needed Yahweh to confirm His word twice by miracles challenging the ordinary [Judges 6:11-22 & 36-40].  Whilst Barak was so scared he wouldn’t fight unless the prophetess went with him [Judges 4:6-8].  Both these men are mentioned as walking by faith.

As I read this ‘Rollcall of Faith’ recently, I understood that taking the next step which opens to us equates to ‘walking by faith’.  90-year-old Sarah laughed when she overheard Yahweh telling Abraham they would have a son, until she remembered the integrity of the One who had promised [Hebrews 11:11]. Frightened Rahab was simply kind to the spies, taking the next step by hiding them [v31].  Terrified Israel crossed the Red Sea by faith [v29], but what other option was there?

Have you considered that you’re walking by faith?  In the past, I’ve found that phrase daunting, but now I’m enjoying knowing each step counts towards the overall picture!
