Watch That Tongue

Thought For The Week 393

Yahshua was a wonderful, caring, compassionate Person, a good Shepherd, an incredible Friend.  He was also a straight talker, not afraid to speak the truth, and never giving mixed messages.  One day, surrounded by a crowd so vast people were actually trampling on one another, He said, “There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.  What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs” [Luke 12:2-3].  Don’t dismiss this as being ‘aimed’ at the Pharisees!  It is a universal truth.  Each of us should pause to consider it personally.  There will be no ‘secrets’ in heaven; there is no place for hypocrisy in the heavenly family on earth.

Yahshua is not denying our right to privacy, nor threatening issues of discretion and confidentiality, but, I believe, is challenging humanity’s tendency to insincerity, gossip, backbiting, and deceptive behaviour.  He had an aversion to hypocrites!  Interestingly, He’s the only one who uses this word in the New Testament.  At the time, it was used to describe an actor, who would speak his lines from a behind a large mask which represented the character he was playing.  ‘Don’t be a hypocrite,’ takes on a whole new meaning when we consider that, doesn’t it?  Are you wearing a mask?

Yahshua’s brother, James, gives us a little comfort.  “We all make mistakes in all kinds of ways,” he writes, “but the man who can claim that he never says the wrong thing can consider himself perfect, for if he can control his tongue he can control every other part of his personality” [James 3:2, J.B. Phillips].

“Check your tongue,” writes Charles Spurgeon. “Be cautious and careful.  Live always as one who realises [Yahweh’s] omnipotence.”  Yahweh and Yahshua live within, so they are privy to every conversation, action, and thought we have!  I’m asking myself if I live every moment of every day with this knowledge.  Do I behave, always, as I would if I were walking alongside one of them?
