When Friends Sleep

Thought For The Week 432

On the evening before He died, Yahshua was with His disciples in an upper room in Jerusalem.  He talked in depth about many things, teaching them, and sharing comforting words for the days ahead [John 13-17].  He was neither worrying nor complaining about the immediate future. In fact, when He left for Gethsemane, it was with a song of praise on His lips. Yet His heart was breaking, and He was in emotional agony. Telling His disciples He wanted to pray, He asked His friends, Peter, James and John, to accompany Him to a quiet place.  Incredibly, He then confessed, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” begging them, “Stay here and keep watch with me.” At this critical point in His life He desperately needed His friends. But while He anguished before His Father, they went to sleep [See Matthew 26:36-45]!

The story of Gethsemane always moves me. How courageous Yahshua was!  Since He prayed the same agonising prayer three times, we get a sense of just how distressed and grief-stricken he was. Yahweh was requiring straightforward obedience, and His precious Son was shuddering in horror. Yahweh was content to wait until Yahshua finally meant His submissive “…nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”  Have you ever found yourself struggling to come to terms with Yahweh’s will?  We should be encouraged by Yahshua’s experience to know that Yahweh will wait patiently for us to make the right decision.  He wants our agreement to come from a settled heart, even if it’s an anguished one!

Have you ever felt abandoned in a time of great despair or agony?  Has it seemed as though all those closest to you are asleep, too tired or disinterested to notice your pain?  This is often the time when that personal decision or conclusion must be solely between you and your Father.  We can draw immense comfort from knowing Yahshua is totally aware of every anguished breath, every anxious thought.  He is never asleep and always ready to sustain and comfort when we call on Him.

What a wonderful thought to take with us into the New Year!
