Over the last decade, the importance of social media has grown rapidly, and it’s estimated there are almost 5 billion users world-wide. Regularly posting is a network of media moguls known as ‘influencers’ and, incredibly, 21% of them earn over $50,000 annually! It’s big business! An influencer is “someone who affects or changes the way that other people behave“ [Cambridge Dictionary]. Who are you influenced by?
When I asked myself this question recently, it gave rise to some others. “Is Yahweh my key influencer?” “Am I connected to those whose lives reflect His influence?” “Am I willing to learn from them?” “Do I live in such a way as to influence others, drawing them towards a deeper understanding of Yahshua?” It’s easy to be drawn into needing to know what’s ‘trending’ in styles, music, games and so on. Whilst this isn’t a bad thing in itself, take a moment to consider how much of your life it consumes. What’s influencing you?
These thoughts were generated in my heart by A.W. Tozer, who said, “[Yahweh] is His own standard; He imitates nobody and is influenced by nobody.” Our Father is impeccable, without compare, and He is always Himself. Never more than He has been, never less, and with Him “there is never the slightest variation or shadow of inconsistency” [James 1:17, J.B. Phillips NT]. His faithfulness is unchanging; He’ll never cease to be what He is and who He is. “…everything [Yahweh] says or does must accord with His faithfulness,” writes Tozer. “He will always be true to Himself and to His works, and to His creation.”
Through the centuries righteous men and women have worshipped Yahweh in wholehearted delight, and sincere people have followed Him with devotion, seeking for ever increasing holiness. Around the world devotion is expressed in unique ways, but the desire of every truly hungry soul must be to draw closer to Him. The standard He requires, has always required, is for us to be perfect even as He is perfect [Matthew 5:48]. Surely, this must be the greatest and most demanding trend of all time.
