Do you have problems? So do I! Do you regularly need Yahweh’s help, support, comfort? Me, too! Do you make mistakes – often the same ones? I certainly do! As I thanked Yahweh for His love and longsuffering recently, these thoughts flooded my mind and I was daunted by how much trouble we are. “Why do you bother with us?” I cried. My heart softened into stillness, then warmed with His reply, “Because I care!”
As I was musing over this a scripture surfaced, “…[we] are all the work of his hands…” [Job 34:19]. All of us? Yes! Rich, poor, old, young, royalty, commoner, celebrity, homeless, outcast or despised, we’re all His workmanship! Which is why He cares. “This is real love—not that we loved [Yahweh], but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins” [1 John 4:10]. It’s personal! It’s about the ‘me’ person in each of us – He cares! If I completely believe this it has the power to change my entire life.
Yahweh said, “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you” [Isaiah 66:13]. What a beautiful picture. When we watch a mother with her baby in her arms we see a total concentration of love, and the reciprocal, adoring gaze of implicit trust. This is the image Yahweh wants us to hold when we think of His love for us. Incredibly, He has a total concentration of love for each of us; He cares! “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?” He asks. “Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands” [Isaiah 49:15-16]. In the total concentration of His love, can I offer the adoring gaze of implicit trust?
A baby is born with the quality of trust, but when we are born again, we must cultivate trust, which develops as we take risks in acceptance and service. The more we condition ourselves to accept Yahweh’s loving involvement in every area of our lives, the more we’ll be able to trust His Word absolutely. It’s life changing!
