“Dishonest scales are detestable to [Yahweh], but an accurate weight is his delight” [Proverbs 11:1]. As I read this scripture recently, I was arrested by the word “delight”. Yahweh is delighted, I mused. What a beautiful thought! What exactly is it that delights Him, I pondered? The answer flashed into my heart instantly - honesty! Yahweh is delighted when we’re honest! Did you ever wonder what Yahweh thinks of you? Did it ever occur to you that He could be delighted in you? It’s an astonishing thought, isn’t it! We can be so anxious about pleasing Him, so worried over what we see as our personal shortcomings and weaknesses, we fail to consider His delight. For example, have you ever been given too much change, and returned the excess [often to the amazement of the cashier]? Yahweh is delighted!
There’s more! Those who “…are blameless and wholehearted in their ways are His delight!” [Proverbs 11:20]. This isn’t about people who never make mistakes, but about those who are sincerely trying to do what is right. It’s about people of integrity, honestly trying to do those things which are pleasing to their Father. Yahweh delights in them!
There’s something else! “[Yahweh] detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy” [Proverbs 12:22]. The Christian Standard Bible translates this, “…faithful people are his delight.” Yahweh’s delight is for those who tell the truth, and it’s interesting that this is seen to be a faithful and trustworthy trait. Sometimes truth telling can be automatic, sometimes challenging, and sometimes it’s personally costly, but remember, Yahweh delights in those who tell the truth!
I’m now looking out for things that delight Yahweh. Imagine my joy to discover “the prayer of the upright is his delight” [Proverbs 15:8]. We pray in differing ways, don’t we? Short, sharp communications throughout our day, desperate cries for His help and guidance when we’re in trouble, the lifting up of those who need our prayer support, cries of joy and delight, prayers of gratitude and thankfulness - there are numerous ways of connecting with the Most High. Multiple opportunities for you and me to delight Yahweh!
Delight Him today!
