Yahweh On The Calvary Road!

Thought For The Week 526

I delight in the way the book of Hebrews skilfully weaves together the history and practices of the Old Testament with the life of Yahshua.  My heart and imagination were captured recently as I read, “By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. He received the promises and yet he was offering his one and only son, the one to whom it had been said, Your offspring will be traced through Isaac” (11:17-18, Christian Standard Bible).

Abraham, with the knife upraised and hovering over his precious, long-awaited son; Isaac, the healthy young man who submitted to being laid on an altar: what were they both thinking?  Yahweh had already chosen this man to father a nation through this son.  It would be a holy nation, a kingdom of priests, through whom He would send His own beloved Son into our world. Why then, order Abraham to sacrifice Isaac?  It makes no sense, but Yahweh was a Father planning to sacrifice His only Son, so I ask myself, what momentous issues hung in the balance as Abraham slowly raised the knife?  We may never know, but he passed the test.

Abraham was close enough to look into Isaac’s trusting eyes as he prepared to sacrifice him.  I believe Yahweh, too, was close enough to Yahshua to look into His eyes (and heart) during His last traumatic hours.  When Yahshua was agonising in Gethsemane, Yahweh was close by; when He was humiliated in the Judgement Hall, beaten and mistreated by the soldiers, staggering under the weight of the cross, His Father was nearby.  As Yahshua groaned on the stake, gasping for breath and shuddering in anguish and distress, His Father was there, suffering through every pain.  At noon, He darkened the sun for Yahshua’s final hours.  Was this, I wonder, to protect His Child from the extra misery of scorching midday heat?

“Yet [Yahweh] was willing To crush Him, causing Him to suffer; If He would give Himself as a guilt offering [an atonement for sin]” (Isaiah 53:10, Amplified Bible).  A divine plan, gloriously fulfilled on Calvary.  And my heart fills with fresh appreciation, understanding and love for the Father Who gave His Son!

Blessed is the person who places his confidence in Yahweh and does not rely on arrogant people or those who follow lies.

Pause For Thought

No matter what happens to us in this life, the word of [Yahweh] tells us that [Yahweh] is for us, not against us.
