Paul drew illustrations for his spiritual teachings from the natural world. Yahweh never changes, and so the laws He bound into the natural world, from creation, still stand today. Picking up on similarities between the natural and spiritual worlds, Paul stated bluntly that whatever we sow, we’ll reap (Galatians 6:7). He noticed, too, that those sowing sparingly reaped sparingly, while those sowing liberally reaped a liberal harvest (2 Corinthians 9:6). Inspired, he wrote, “Now the one who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will also provide and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness” (2 Corinthians 9:10). This wasn’t a prayer, but a statement! He was saying, in effect, Yahweh binds into our spiritual lives the same growth principles as those in His natural world, even providing the seed needed to produce our harvest. He is also the One, “who is at work within you, giving you the will and the power to achieve his purpose” (Philippians 2:13, J.B. Phillips).
This is an incredible picture of the fruit-bearing disciples of Yahshua! “You did not choose me,” our Saviour said, “but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit…” (John 15:16, italics added). Yielding a harvest is a crucial factor in every spiritual life - it’s expected. But everything we need to produce an acceptable crop has been provided already. “Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit,” declared Yahshua, “because apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5, italics added). If we live our lives in harmony with Yahshua (i.e. abiding in Him) everything we need to produce a harvest of righteousness is provided.
Fruitfulness is intrinsically connected to obedience and submission, which are the essence of abiding. When we abide in Yahshua, Yahweh provides the seed which guarantees a regular, fruit-bearing harvest. He also works within us to ensure we have the will and power to accomplish His purpose. This is why the apostle Peter could write, “For His divine power has bestowed on us [absolutely] everything necessary for [a dynamic spiritual] life and godliness…” (2 Peter 1:3, Amplified Bible).
We are never alone!
